Emily Dawson

Architect, AIA, LEED AP

Emily is a licensed architect and implementer of bio-based structural solutions.

She founded Single Widget in 2022 to focus on making buildings behave more like plants, and industries more like forests through design and innovation. Her consulting firm, Field Edge, connects natural resources and regenerative industry-scale projects. She has been researching, lecturing and writing on mass timber topics since 2013, after designing the first Cross-Laminated Timber structure built in Oregon. Inspired by her fellowship work on European mass timber, Emily increasingly applies off-site fabrication approaches in her work. Her portfolio of sustainably focused building and infrastructure projects ranging to $125M spans nearly 25 years, including institutional and civic & cultural projects with complex site constraints and client structures, as well as multifamily and several campus master plans. Leading design teams has given her a broad view of the industry, as well as a passion for breaking boundaries in the profession. Since her first CLT project, Emily has focused on breaking barriers for mass timber projects from feasibility through construction, driven by a commitment to transform the way we build. For her work in prefabrication, timber, and sustainability topics, Emily is a sought-after speaker at national and international events. She co-authors the annual International Mass Timber Report, which has global readership.
